White sharks encroaching the arabian gulf

ok, just so you know- I am not white, I am not married and I come from a family of 5.

True real life account -I recently bumped into an old friend who used to work for an engineering company in downtown kuwait. He was the company's senior contracts administrator making around 700 KD/month and was pretty satisfied with his job until a pleasurable young american chap applied for the same job at the company. FYI, my friend graduated from Osmania university(Hyderabad) with an MBa in Finance and had almost 8 years of experience prior to getting that job. Well, as it works out, he was asked to find another job within 3 months or he'd have to fly back to India. As you may already perceive where I am going, you many not be surprised to know that the American replaced him and is making almost double that monthly salary, as I was told by my friend.

Shocked? Well dont be. Since the americans liberated Kuwait in 1991, there has been a major influx of american and European citizens coming to Kuwait on commercial contracts for engineering and oil extraction projects. But it is only recently that more and more western citizens are finding consignments in the private sector as well. This is of course, good for Kuwait's economy as it promotes diversity, creativity and democracy. Or does it? People like my friend live all over Kuwait, and they are not only from India but from nations such as the Philippines, Egypt, Pakistan, and Iran- where output of qualified educated professionals is quite high. Yet, when a white skinned American, british or australian national comes through, qualified or not, Kuwaiti Management unbolts their HR processes to suit any kind of need.

Lets look at some of the private schools here in Kuwait such as the British school of Kuwait or the American school of Kuwait. Through careful and informed communal research, I found out that an egyptian teacher with a Master's degree in Education would be paid nearly 1/3 rd of the salary that a white american or british teacher would for the same qualification and experience. Now, many HR managers and decision makers argue that salaries and fringe benefits are provided to westerners because it is consummate with standards of living in their respective countries. Im sorry to say, but that is a load of horsehit. For one, they are living in Kuwait not in their countries when they are paid, which means they fall under the standards of living for Kuwait. Secondly, they are not the only breed of human beings that have houses to build, families to support and loans to pay off.

Don’t misunderstand me- I’m not distressed or anything cos I make a decent income and have never experienced discrimination of that kind here in Kuwait, but when I personally witness people who have been "intentionally"(I say intentionally because there are of course deserving westerners that need to replace others in some cases) snubbed because a westerner replaced them at their jobs, it boils me to the core.

Lets look a little more in-depth into why Kuwaiti Management particularly favours white skinned americans and europeans. Is it simply racial discrimination, or is there more to it? I believe it is all linked to the corrupt dealings between the Kuwaiti, Saudi and American governments. Executives from super conglomerates such as Halliburton , KBR and even the American Army here in Kuwait are swindling millions through bribes received as they peddle influence and try to return favors to some of the most corrupt business and political families of Kuwait, who today are stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from, believe it or not, American tax payers back in the states. Far fetched? I think not. What’s funny is that even many non-Anglo Americans and naturalized American citizens are discriminated at the US embassy and other workplaces due to their ethnic and religious backgrounds.

On the positive side however, there is change. Now that India’s economy is growing at almost 8% per year (second only to china), more and more Kuwaiti startups and established enterprises are starting to realize that the best talent and expertise has always been in Kuwait. It’s now only a matter of tapping into it. There are more Indians, Philipinos and Iranians being employed in senior management and administration positions and being paid the salaries they deserve.

Give us an equal playing field is all we saying.

Part of it is indeed a racial hierarchy, but there is some logic to it as well. Take the situation of engineering in Kuwait:

Generally speaking and simply put: 'engineer' means different things in India vs. say, Canada or parts of the U.S. If an India-educated engineer wanted to move to Calgary and pick up a job there may be additional education required, as the prior education may prove sufficient for a technical college but not a standard university in North America. Where this is a possibility with Indian-educated engineers, this is almost a guarantee for Philipino engineers (or students in general), where a basic 4-year degree is like a 2-year anywhere else, due to their truncating the 12-years of public school to 10.

There is a shift occurring, but it is not all there yet, and even once the shift occurs and there are consistently well-trained engineers flowing out of Southeast Asia, it may take still further time to allow public perception to catch up and pay them their dues.

This is not at all a smack at those from Southeast Asia; I know how competitive and trying Indian high school and college life is, having experienced it vicariously through numerous friends. The issue is not smart people, or people with potential, but rather quality of education provided to meet the bar marked 'engineer'.

Hewhocutsdown, you said: "Generally speaking and simply put: 'engineer' means different things in India vs. say, Canada or parts of the U.S. If an India-educated engineer wanted to move to Calgary and pick up a job there may be additional education required, as the prior education may prove sufficient for a technical college but not a standard university in North America. Thanks for the feedback hewhocutsdown, but I dont think that is entirely true- Let me explain. Please dont think Im taking a smack at westerners, but your post is significant because it represents a large majority of enterprises in kuwait that favour american and european workers because they do not understand or know first hand about the education system in India. I got my masters degree in computer science from depaul university in Chicago, and I can very comfortably tell you that everything from the curriculum, levels of theory study, competition among students, and output, pale in comparison with a lot of Indian universities whose standards are believe it or not, very high. In fact Indian universities focus more on science and technology at the freshman stage than any other countries of the world (Forrester tech research)The most popular evaulation perception among Kuwaiti hiring personnel, and I know this because I work with them, is that Indians could not be as skilled because they come from a country whose standards are not as high a america. This is what puts me off because I know exactly what the education standards are in India as well as in the United States.

The points you make about the Indian or philpino educated engineer is pertinent to getting accepted in a college from high school, not for an experienced campaigner with over 8 or 9 years of global working experience and and Mba/MSc under his/her belt. It is racial heirarchy yes, but politics have a huge role to play as well.

I think its very true...i work for a huge company and i see that happening somany times... many a times (not all the time) we see fools (white skinned) being recruited for top positions with huge pay packages and they don't even know how to do the job...they r such a bunch of loosers..im sure they were jobless in their own country and the management here are even bigger fools to employ them...

Its sad but true. There are only too few places that do embrace the intelligence of a lesser color.

I have seen whites at their jobs pale in comparison to the the coloreds, but at the end of the day they are the bloody bling bling of the company. They just take away the jobs, the women, the better cars. It just sucks for our generation, but evolutions probably going to stamp them out some day (muaahhahahaha)

lets not shoot down white americans or europeans- Its not their fault that the bigger bum holes are the kuwaiti decision makers that hire them

hey, lets put those claws away now people - this is not a white bashing post, but a forum to discuss why Kuwait's job scene in terms of racial heirarchy and favour is in the dumps...

I think favouring indigenous talent(like hiring more kuwaitis) , however retarded it may seem, is good for the country. Kuwaiti youth are getting educated now and are for once, getting managerial and senior positions they deserve. You will of course only see this if you work in the corporate private sector, but the change is there.

I sincerely hope that Kuwait will see the day when a bangladeshi man can walk into a shawerma shop, order something on the menu and not be asked where he is from.
